![]() ![]() ![]() Despite being recorded countless times since, Sinatra’s is the only version to make a dent on the charts, peaking at No. The nostalgic tune wouldn’t get on the path to becoming a standard until over a decade later when Frank Sinatra recorded it for Columbia in 1947. Earlier in December ‘34, the very first recording of “Autumn of New York” was released. The show, which debuted in December 1934, received tepid reviews, and only ran for five months (it didn’t even make it to autumn). However, the song found a home as the closing number in the revue Thumbs Up. Unlike a lot of his compositions, “Autumn in New York” wasn’t written specifically for a play or film. A few years prior, Duke composed (with lyrics by Yip Harburg) another season/city standard, “April in Paris.” Other Great American Songbook entries from Duke include the cheery “Taking a Chance on Love” (also with lyrics by Harburg) and the somber “I Can’t Get Started” (with lyrics by Ira Gershwin). He’s quoted as saying it did not contain “a particle” of popular appeal and called his poem set to music “a genuine emotional outburst.” The concept for the song didn’t totally come out of nowhere though. Duke did not expect this classic tune to be a hit. “Autumn in New York” was written by Russian immigrant Vernon Duke (birth name: Vladimir Dukelsky) in the summer of 1934 while he was in Connecticut and homesick for New York City. Rhyming “inviting” and “first-nighting” is pretty cool, I must say.

The VR Pointer (Vive Controller, Oculus Touch, or Mouse) If you have the Oculus Touch Controller and/or the Vive Controller installed on a system along with their requisite Virtual Reality headsets, there will be separate General Controls, Platform Movement, and Menu Navigation submenus for the different controllers. Major Differences Between Various Controllers However, the same key can be set to different functions in different contexts. If a key is already set to a function in a given context, setting that key to some other function in the same context will replace the existing function. Some system controls such as accessing the Options Menu (ESC on the keyboard) or activating QuickSave will always do those actions regardless of which context is active. This is discussed in more detail in the Major Differences Between Various Controllers section below. As with most controls, however, it is possible to map these to buttons on the Vive Controller. Please note that, by default, if using the Vive Controller, it is only possible to manipulate menus using the pointer. ![]() These controls are remappable and are available in the Menu Navigation submenu of the Controls menu. If, while in one of the above two contexts, you access a menu, controls apply to the manipulation of that menu. These controls are remappable and are available in the General Controls submenu of the Controls menu. If you are in the cockpit of the Skunk, with no other menus open, controls apply to the ship itself, controlling the attitude and movement of your ship. Which context it applies to changes dynamically depending on what you are doing at any given moment. Because of this, most controls are always only applied to one of three contexts. X Rebirth VR Edition is a very complex game with multiple simultaneously active systems, all acting in concert. However, when activating the Oculus Touch at this point, your ship will start moving forward at half-speed. For example: if set to off, you would move a throttle device to the very back of its axis to make the ship stop. So if using a joystick which requires bi-directional throttle off (such as an analog throttle device with no center notch) with another input device that requires bi-directional throttle on (such as a gamepad or the Oculus Touch), your configuration settings may conflict. IMPORTANT: Remember that bi-directional throttle is a setting that is used for all of your input devices. At the moment, this is only mapped for the Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog stick. ![]() With this key held down, moving the control forward would apply full reverse thrust rather than full forward thrust. If Bi-directional throttle is off, how do you move the ship in reverse? It is possible to map a control to invert the axis controlling the throttle. ![]() This is done by toggling the Bi-directional Throttle setting in the Controls submenu of the Options menu to Off. It is possible, however, to make the entire range of motion only apply to forward movement, thereby making the ship stop by pulling the control all the way back. It is also possible to map the throttle to a control with an input range such as an external throttle device.īy default, this device would then control your full range of linear motion: moving the throttle control forward along the defined axis applying forward thrust, moving it back applying reverse thrust, and resting the control at the center of its axis to stop the ship. "An Obvious and Simple System of Natural Liberty" These two principles eventually would become the hallmarks of modern capitalism. Smith attacked government intervention in the economy and provided a blueprint for free markets and free trade. During this period, he visited London several times and witnessed debates in Parliament on the growing American resistance to British rule.įinally, in March 1776, Smith published An Inquiry Into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations. The following year, Smith returned home to Scotland to finish his book, a task that took him nine more years. ![]() He also became acquainted with leading political figures such as Benjamin Franklin and Edmund Burke (an important British political writer and leader). Smith researched Britain’s credit and debt along with the history of colonization by ancient Rome. Townshend wanted the American colonists to help pay down the war debt through such measures as a tax on tea. This war enabled Britain to seize all of French North America. Townshend had to deal with the huge national debt that resulted from the Seven Years’ War. He worked as a researcher for Charles Townshend, who was then in charge of Britain’s finances. Quesnay’s innovative idea prompted Smith to begin to write his own book on economics. He believed a nation’s wealth came from its farm produce, which circulated throughout the land, nourishing everyone. Quesnay took issue with the popular belief, known as mercantilism, that a nation’s wealth was its hoard of gold or silver. Quesnay had devised a system called "Physiocracy," which he believed explained the source of national wealth. Smith also met the leading French economist, Francois Quesnay. Smith traveled to Paris with his student and met Voltaire and other philosophers involved in the French Enlightenment. In 1763, Smith quit his professorship at Glasgow and tutored the stepson of Charles Townshend, who later became Britain’s treasury minister in the years leading up to the American Revolution. He concluded that self-seeking individuals were "led by an invisible hand" that caused them to unintentionally act in ways that still benefited society. He contended, however, that this was not bad. there are evidently some principles in his nature, which interest him in the fortune of others, and render their happiness necessary to him, though he derives nothing from it except the pleasure of seeing it.īut Smith also believed that people often acted in their self-interest, especially in economic matters.
